Fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) recently participated in an engaging Brown Bag Session with Mrs. Oluyemisi Adefoluke Ogunlola, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Law Reform Commission, gaining valuable insights into the critical role of legal reform in shaping responsive governance and sustainable development.

The session provided Fellows with a deeper understanding of how laws evolve to meet the changing realities of society and the institutional processes required to ensure that governance remains relevant, inclusive, and effective. Drawing from her extensive experience, Mrs. Ogunlola highlighted the Commission’s mandate in reviewing existing laws, identifying legislative gaps, and proposing reforms that strengthen institutions and improve the lives of citizens.

She emphasized that law reform is not merely a technical exercise but a strategic tool for societal progress. By continuously assessing emerging challenges and aligning legal frameworks with contemporary needs, governments can create environments that foster innovation, equity, accountability, and development. According to her, effective laws serve as the foundation upon which strong institutions and thriving societies are built.

The discussion further explored the relationship between leadership and reform, challenging Fellows to view leadership as a proactive force for change rather than a reactive response to existing problems. Mrs. Ogunlola noted that transformational leaders are those who possess the foresight to identify opportunities for improvement and the courage to champion reforms that create long-term impact.

Fellows engaged actively throughout the session, reflecting on the importance of legal and institutional frameworks in addressing societal challenges. Many described the conversation as an eye-opening exploration of how thoughtful policy and legislative reforms can transform today’s challenges into tomorrow’s opportunities for growth and development.

In her remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Academy, Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, reaffirmed LJLA’s commitment to exposing Fellows to diverse perspectives on governance, policy, and leadership. She noted that understanding the mechanisms that drive institutional effectiveness is essential for raising leaders who are equipped to create meaningful and sustainable change.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Fellow Halima Bello, who expressed heartfelt appreciation to Mrs. Ogunlola for sharing her expertise and practical insights. She also commended the Academy for consistently creating platforms that broaden Fellows’ understanding of governance and strengthen their capacity for impactful leadership.

The engagement underscores LJLA’s mission to nurture a generation of visionary leaders who recognise that lasting progress is achieved through strong institutions, innovative thinking, and the courage to reform systems for the greater good.
