Fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy recently engaged in a thought-provoking leadership session with renowned sociologist and public intellectual, Prof. Lai Olurode, centered on the enduring legacy and leadership philosophy of Late Alhaji Lateef Jakande. The session offered a profound exploration of what it truly means to lead with purpose, discipline, and commitment to public good.
Using the life and governance style of the late statesman as a leadership case study, Prof. Olurode examined how Jakande’s administration became synonymous with people-centered governance, strategic execution, and impactful service delivery. He described Jakande as a leader whose actions consistently reflected clarity of purpose, simplicity, and an unwavering dedication to solving societal problems, particularly in education, housing, transportation, and social welfare.
Prof. Olurode emphasized that leadership must go beyond influence or visibility and instead be measured by the ability to respond effectively to the pressing needs of society. According to him, Lateef Jakande’s legacy remains exceptional because it was built on structure, discipline, integrity, and a deep understanding of the realities facing ordinary people. He noted that Jakande demonstrated that leadership is both an intellectual responsibility and a lived example—one that demands consistency between values, decisions, and service.
The session sparked deep reflection among Fellows, many of whom described the conversation as a timely reminder that impactful leadership is rooted in action rather than rhetoric. Discussions focused on the importance of intentional governance, accountability, and the courage to pursue long-term societal impact over personal recognition.
In her remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Academy, Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, reaffirmed the Academy’s commitment to preserving and transmitting the ideals of transformational leadership exemplified by Lateef Jakande. She noted that the Academy continues to shape Fellows into leaders who are equipped to address complex societal challenges with empathy, competence, and integrity.
As the session concluded, Fellows reflected on the timeless relevance of Jakande’s legacy and the responsibility of emerging leaders to uphold values of service, discipline, and purposeful governance in their respective spheres of influence.
The session ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Fellow Soledayo Odesola, who expressed appreciation to Prof. Olurode for the depth of insight shared and for inspiring Fellows to embrace leadership as a call to meaningful and measurable service.
