Leadership is shaped not only by truth, but by discernment, dialogue, and the ability to learn from every encounter. This perspective framed a compelling Fireside Chat session where Fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy engaged with the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Sam Egube, in a conversation centered on relationships, intentional growth, and the human side of leadership.

Addressing the Fellows, Mr. Egube underscored that leadership value is not self assigned but defined by impact. He noted that individuals derive meaning and relevance through the people they work with and the systems they help strengthen. According to him, sustainable leadership is rooted in contribution, not position.

He urged the Fellows to approach leadership with empathy, reminding them that policies, reforms, and institutions only succeed when they account for the humanity of those they serve. True transformation, he explained, is a process driven by people, relationships, and shared responsibility.

The session also challenged Fellows to confront internal limitations. Mr. Egube encouraged them to release restrictive rules that narrow ambition, guard their sense of self worth, and remain deliberate about personal development. He emphasised that growth does not happen by chance but through conscious effort, continuous learning, and the cultivation of relationships anchored in shared values.

Beyond individual excellence, the conversation highlighted the importance of collective progress. Fellows were reminded that leadership thrives when success is shared and that lasting impact is achieved when people grow together.

The Fireside Chat left Fellows with a clear takeaway: leadership is strengthened not in isolation, but through intentional relationships, purposeful growth, and a commitment to building systems that work for everyone.
